Physical services FAQ
From your hands
into safe files.
Answers about scanning, conversion, original materials and delivery.
01Do my photos need to be organized first?+
Not necessarily. I’ll use any organization you already have in place, but it is not required. Physical photos can be sorted into groups during the project just as digital files can be organized into folders.
02Do I need to count everything before contacting you?+
No. A rough estimate or a few photos of the collection is enough to start.
03How are the photos scanned?+
It depends on the size, condition and fragility of each photo. I have multiple scanners available and choose the safest, most appropriate method for the materials in your project.
04What if there is writing on the back of a photo?+
The back can be scanned too. The files will be labeled as an A side and B side so it is clear that they belong to the same photo.
05Will any of my scanned photos be upside down?+
No. One advantage of this personalized service is that I review each photo individually and rotate it when needed.
06What if I notice an error in a scanned photo?+
I manually review individual photos for issues such as streaks or dust marks, but mistakes can happen. If an error is spotted, I will rescan the photo.
07Can you scan photos that are still in albums?+
Often, yes. Depending on the album and its condition, I may scan full pages or recommend careful removal. Photo removal is also available as an hourly service.
08What formats can you convert?+
Services include VHS, VHS-C, MiniDV, Hi8, Digital8, DVDs, CDs, slides, negatives and film reels. Unusual formats can be reviewed individually.
09How will I receive my digital files?+
Finished files can be uploaded to an agreed cloud service, such as Dropbox or Amazon Photos, or delivered on a USB drive. Files are organized so they are easy to find, view and share.
10What happens to my original photos?+
Your preference. Originals can be returned or, if requested, disposed of. Nothing will be discarded until you’ve reviewed and approved the digital files.
11How long will the project take?+
Timing depends on quantity, format and condition. You will receive a realistic timeframe after I review the collection.
12Do you offer volume discounts?+
Yes, volume discounts may be available for larger projects.
13How do I get my items to you?+
Local drop-off arrangements are made directly with Melissa in the Johnston and Des Moines area. If you are not local, you can mail your project after the details and safest shipping plan are confirmed.
